After Heidi Plummer
lost her job through
a corporate
downsizing, an idea
popped into her
head. She decided to
pursue a long-time
dream of owning a
retail business and
opened Kernel
Cody's Popcorn
Shoppe LLC
in LeClaire, Iowa.
Since opening March
13, 2009, Kernel
Cody's has popped
5,000 pounds of
popcorn, Wiley
Plummer, said. From
a century-old brick
building at 125 N.
Cody Road, once the
home of the town's
telegraph office, it
produces and sells
25 varieties of
flavored popcorn
such as Snickers,
caramel, white
cheddar, peanut
butter and the
popular LeClaire
Mix, a combination
of cheese and
caramel corn.
The flavored
popcorns are sold in
reseal-able bags
priced up to $6.95
and in large gift
canisters that vary
in price and range
in size from one
gallon to 6.5
gallons. Regular
popcorn is available
in 3 sizes from
$1.50 to $3.50.
Also sold are
chocolates from
Lagomarcino's
Confectionery,
old-fashioned
candies and soft
drinks. The
resulting ambiance
is that of an
old-fashioned candy
store.
Portions of the
building's original
tin ceiling, an old
Coca Cola machine
and miniature
vintage tractors
from Wiley's
collection add to
the fun. Corn is
popped and flavored
in open view of
customers, which
provides both visual
and olfactory
delights.
LeClaire's river
heritage is visible
from the back door,
where there is a
view of the
Mississippi River,
the Buffalo Bill
Museum and the Lone
Star steamboat.
